The fire service community in Jacksonville, Florida, is remembering Chris Sorensen, a retired Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department (JFRD) engineer and EMT who helped build a nationally recognized restaurant brand while maintaining deep roots in public safety. His legacy of service, generosity, and commitment to first responders is being honored by colleagues, friends, and those whose lives were touched by his work.

The Funtastic Fire Brigade paid tribute to Sorensen, reflecting on his years in the fire service and the lasting contributions he made alongside his brother, Robin Sorensen. Chris began his firefighting career with the Brevard County Fire Department, where he served for four years before joining Jacksonville Fire Rescue. He spent another decade with JFRD, completing training at the Stockton Street station before being assigned to Station 1, C Shift.

During his time there, Sorensen served as an engineer on Engine 1 and later Ladder 1. He left the department in December 1998, but his connection to the fire service continued through his family, business ventures, and support for public safety organizations.

Sorensen was the son of retired JFRD Captain Robert “Captain Video” Sorensen, who dedicated 43 years to the department. His brother, Robin, also served as a firefighter with Jacksonville International Airport. Together, Chris and Robin carried their fire service background into the business world when they co-founded Firehouse Subs in 1994.

The restaurant brand grew into a nationally recognized business inspired by the brothers’ firefighting experience and appreciation for the emergency services community. In 2005, they established the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, which has awarded more than $110 million in grants to support first responders and public safety organizations.

As tributes continue, Chris Sorensen is being remembered for a life that connected public service, entrepreneurship, and community support. He leaves behind his wife, Kirsten, his children, grandchildren, and the wider Sorensen family, along with former colleagues and friends who shared his journey.

The Funtastic Fire Brigade extended its condolences to his loved ones and everyone who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him.
